Moving house in Eerste River: a local checklist that keeps the day calm

10 August 2026/6 min read

Jackfire is based in Eerste River, so most of our home moves start within a few kilometres of our yard. That local knowledge matters more than people expect. Gate access at a complex, a tight driveway or a school run that closes a road at 14:00 can add two hours to a move if nobody planned for it. This checklist walks through the way we run a typical Eerste River house move, step by step.

Book your date before the last week of the month

Month end is the busiest window for removals in the Northern and Eastern suburbs of Cape Town. Leases start on the first, transfers register at the end of the month and every truck in the area is spoken for. Booking two to three weeks ahead gives you a choice of times instead of whatever slot is left.

If your dates are still uncertain, tell us the range. We can hold a provisional slot and confirm once your keys are released, which is far easier than trying to find a crew at 48 hours notice.

Sort access, parking and gate rules first

Most delays in Eerste River are access problems, not packing problems. Complexes often need visitor details logged with security, and some estates restrict truck movement to certain hours.

  • Confirm with the body corporate whether a large truck may enter and when
  • Reserve space in front of both properties so the crew is not carrying items 40 metres
  • Check lift availability and booking times if either address is in a block of flats
  • Note low branches, sharp corners and steep driveways so we bring the right vehicle

Pack in the order the truck loads

A truck loads heavy and square first, then soft and awkward on top. If your boxes are ready in that order, loading takes half the time. Start with the rooms you barely use, keep a clearly marked essentials box for kettles, chargers, medication and bedding, and label every box with the room it belongs in at the new address rather than the old one.

If packing is the part you dread, our crews can do it for you. Wrapping, boxes and protection are covered under our home relocation service, and beds, wardrobes and tables are dismantled and rebuilt on the other side.

Plan the route around Cape Town traffic

Moves between Eerste River, Blue Downs, Kuils River and Brackenfell are short in kilometres but slow in peak traffic. We usually start at 07:00 so the loaded truck is on the road before the N2 and R300 build up. For longer hops toward the southern suburbs or the city bowl, an early start is the single biggest thing that keeps a move to one day.

Leave the old place clean and the new one usable

Landlords hold deposits for rubble, old fittings and abandoned furniture. Clear that out on the same day rather than making a second trip. We run rubble removal alongside moves, so broken furniture, garden waste and building offcuts leave with the truck.

At the new address, ask the crew to place furniture exactly where you want it before they unload the boxes. Moving a wardrobe once is easy for four people with trolleys and very hard for you alone on a Sunday.

Common questions

How much does a house move in Eerste River cost?

Local moves are quoted on volume, distance and access rather than an hourly guess. We agree a fixed price before we load, so there are no fuel or call out surprises on the day.

Can you move a flat on a weekend?

Yes. Saturday and Sunday slots are available and are often the easiest option for complexes that limit weekday truck access.
